Send Mac windows to another device or screen

07/03/2023

Did you know that if you have a Mac and another device like a Pad or Screen attached to your Mac that you can send move the window you’re working on to that connected screen or device? Yes you can.

Some might think it’s a drag windows around to put the window there. Yes it’s true that screens can be dragged from the main screen to the connected one, but getting that screen on an iPad is not as intuitive. Now with Continuity, you can connect the device and move the Mac mouse to the new device, but we want to share the best and easiest way to move windows among all the connected devices.

Provided that all the devices are connected through iCloud, and that you are not using some obscure program, the easiest way to check and see if the current window can be sent to another device is to look at the Window menu up top. If the app you’re using supports this great feature it will look something like this.

In this example, there are three devices to choose from. The HP monitor, iPad3 and iPad 4. We are moving the window to the Pad4 here. You can’t just start swiping and zooming on the moved window, but need it to be connected through Continuity. An Apple Pencil does have limited capabilities like select menu items and text, and two fingers will scroll, but to use the window like you do on the Mac, you need to scroll off the main screen with the mouse to fully control that moved window on the Pad.

This works great for adding sketches, marking and drawing and writing things that can’t easily be done on the Mac.

Now comes the time to move the window back to the Mac. This can be done from the Mac by selecting the Window menu again, or right from the Pad with a pencil click, or even returning to the Home Screen on the pad. To keep it simple, here is the menu command to move that window you just worked on back to the Mac.

It’s a great feature some might find useful while others use it copiously. But at any rate it’s a great feature that you might greatly appreciate having someday, like with signing documents, adding sketches to your work, and even using the new added screen to find things like pictures and documents and then moving them to the main Mac screen for completion.
